Programme note:

Alongside my musical composition, I have developed a fascination with the Pyrenees mountains. I have already written one other wind ensemble piece named after a particular part of the Pyrenees: Els Encantats. However, when I asked to write this particular wind octet, I knew that it would not be my first and probably not my last piece with a strongly Spanish influence in places.

Whereas Els Encantats focuses intently on impression of the ‘enchanted’ mountains, Obertura de los Pirineos covers the entire mountainous region without taking itself too seriously. Built largely on rumba rhythms and a Phrygian Spanish mode, this single movement work is mostly quite fast, with occasional slow interludes of relative tenderness, before it ends with a flourish.
